The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) have appointed US-based coach Rena Wakama as the new head coach of the women’s national basketball team, DTigress ahead of the Women’s Afrobasket championship in Kigali, Rwanda next month. The announcement was made known via the official Twitter page and website of the federation on Friday.
The Rivers state-born coach holds a bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation from Western Carolina in 2014 and an MBA from Manhattan in 2019.
She was a remarkable athlete, showcasing her skills both at the collegiate level and in the professional basketball realm. As a 4-year letterman at the University of Western Carolina, she left an indelible mark on the basketball program, demonstrating her dedication and talent on the court. Her commitment and contributions to the team are a testament to her hard work and passion for the sport.
Following her successful college career, she took her basketball journey overseas, playing professionally in the United Kingdom. This experience allowed her to further develop her skills and gain invaluable international exposure, competing against top-tier players from around the world. Her time playing professionally in the UK undoubtedly honed her abilities and added to her basketball repertoire.
DTigress are grouped in Group D of the competition alongside Egypt and Democratic Republic of Congo as they look to win the trophy for the fourth consecutive time.
26th edition tournament is slated for July 28 to August 6, 2023 at the Kigali Arena.
Rena Wakama, a former national team player signed a two year deal which takes effect today 30th June.
She currently works at Stony Brook University as an Assistant Coach.
