The Senator representing Niger South: Bima Onagi has introduced the bill to ban the importation and use of generating set in the country and he has also called for a 10 year jail term for generator sellers in the country.
The bill has already passed first reading at the Senate Plenary on Wednesday and will await further readings before it is passed into law.
The bill obtained by the Cable News reads that anyone who: “Imports generating sets; or knowingly sells generating sets shall be guilty of an offence and be liable on conviction to be sentenced to imprisonment for a term not less than ten years”.
On the flip side, the country generates about 4,000 megawatts of power and distributes about 3,000 megawatts to a population close to 200 million people.
It is no longer news that majority of Nigerians, especially artisans use generating set for their businesses because of poor quality of power supply.
With regards to the power situation of the country and the introduction of this bill, what does the Nigerian Senate deserve: knocks or Kudos?
