Olympic Games: Why Nigeria’s absence in football event is a disgrace
On Wednesday, April 21st the draws for the Men’s and Women’s football event were held.
The giants of Africa Nigeria were missing from the 24 teams in both categories.
The Men’s Dream Team for players under the age of 23 and the senior women’s national team the Super Falcons did not qualify.
The Dream Failed to qualify after they finished third in their group at the 2019 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations.
The African teams that would represent Africa in the men’s competition are South Africa, Egypt, and Ivory Coast.
Nigeria won the competition in 1996 and finished second in 2008, and could not pick one of three players.
As for the women’s competition, the Super Falcons were knocked out by Ivory Coast after a goalless draw away they could only muster a 1-1 draw in Lagos which led to their elimination while Zambia represent the continent.
The Super Falcons and the Dream Team’s failure to qualify for the competition is made worse with both the men’s and women’s senior basketball team D’Tigers and D’Tigress qualifying for the tournament despite the numerous amount of money and preferential treatment given to football in this country.
