Onuachu scores late as Super Eagles of Nigeria record 1-0 win against Benin Republic

The Super Eagles of Nigeria recorded a 1-0 away win against the Squirrels of Benin Republic in a Group L matchday five 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) fixture played at the Charles De Gaulle Stadium, Porto Novo on Saturday, March 27th.

The game was a closely contested encounter especially after the Super Eagles were already guaranteed a ticket at the 2022 AFCON following a 0-0 draw between other group opponents Lesotho and Sierra Leone in the early fixture.

The first half ended without a goal despite close chances for Henry Onyekuru, Victor Osimhen, and Samuel Chukwueze.

Kelechi Iheanacho provided a spark but was substituted for Paul Onuachu in the 69th minute.

Onuachu who has been in red hot form for Genk in Belgium would score what would turn out to be the winner in the 93rd minute.

The result means that the Super Eagles of Nigeria will finish top of the group regardless of what happens in the final group fixtures.
