Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has become the third Nigerian player to win the Serie A title as Napoli secured their first league title in 33 years. He joins the duo of Obafemi Martins who won the Serie A title with Inter Milan in the 2005/06 season, and Victor Obinna Nsofor also won it with Inter in the 2008/09 season.
Napoli drew 1-1 with Udinese on Thursday, May 4, at the Friuli Stadium to clinch the title. Sandi Lovric scored the first goal of the game for Udinese in the 13th minute, and Osimhen levelled the scores for Napoli in the second half.
Osimhen is the current top scorer in the Italian league with 22 goals and four assists in 27 games. He has also broken Samuel Eto’o’s record for most goals by an African in a Serie A season which is 22.
Since joining Napoli, he has also scored 46 goals overall in the Serie A, which ties George Weah’s record for an African player in the Serie A top flight. Napoli clinched the Serie A title with 80 points from 33 matches.
Napoli will be unable to only equal or break Juventus’ record for some points accrued in a Serie A season. The most points achieved by a single team in a Serie A season is 102 points, which Juventus achieved in the 2013-2014 season. In that season, Juventus won 33 out of their 38 league matches, drawing 3 and losing 2, to finish 17 points clear at the top of the table.
