On August 3, 1996, Nigeria’s under 23 team beat their counterparts from Argentina 3-2 to win the Gold medal in the football event of the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.
Argentina were among the favourites for the Gold medal and went ahead as early as the third minute through Claudio Lopez.
Nigeria found an equalizer through Celestine Babayaro in the 28th minute as both sides went to the halftime break level.
Hernan Crespo put Argentina back in front in the 50th minute when he converted a penalty.
Daniel Amokachi equalized for Nigeria yet again in the 74th minute.
Emmanuel Amunike would score the inner in the 90th minute as Nigeria picked up Africa’s first Gold medal in the football event of the Olympics Games in front of 86,117 fans in attendance at the Sanford Stadium, Athens.
