On the 3rd of December 2018, Luka Modric made history as the first player not named Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to win the Ballon d’Or since 20o7.

Modric was rewarded for an outstanding performance leading Croatia to the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Modric also played a pivotal role in helping Real Madrid win the 2018 Champions League.
