Rivers United have returned to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League after securing a home win over Shooting Stars in Port Harcourt on Thursday.
The Finidi George-led side scored two second half goals to secure maximum points over Gbengba Ogunbote’s Shooting Stars.
The home side had the chance to take the lead on the 15th minute from the penalty spot but Ebuka Akobundu failed to convert twice after the referee ordered a retake.
The first half ended goalless with the home side being the better side with four shots on target whiie the visitors came close just once.
Rivers United continuous pressure paid off as Aniekeme Okon gave the home side the lead five minutes after the restart.
Ndifreke Effiong doubled Rivers United’s lead 15 minutes later to register his second goal of the season.
Rivers United sustained their lead to the end of the match as they return to the top of the league with 17 points, two more than Remo Stars who lost 3 nil to Plateau United.
Rivers United also remain unbeaten in the league so far with 5 victories, 2 drawn matches in 7 matches.
