The Flying Eagles have qualified for the quarterfinals of the ongoing FIFA Under-20 World Cup after defeating host Argentina in the round of 16 of the 2023 U-20 FIFA World Cup.
The game ended 2-0 on Wednesday, May 31 at the Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario.
After a goalless first half, Ibrahim Muhammad scored the first goal of the game in the 61st minute with a left footed strike in the box.
Haliru Sarki directed the ball into the net with his flying header to score for Nigeria in the 92nd minute.
Argentina came close to scoring in the 97th minute but the ball went wide following a goal mouth scramble.
Nigeria will play the winner of the game between Ecuador and South Korea in the quarter-final on June 4 at the Santiago del Estero.
The Flying Eagles have never won the FIFA U-20 World Cup but they were runners up at the Saudi ’89 and Netherlands 2005 editions.
Argentina have however won the FIFA U-20 World Cup on a record six occasions.
