Stats that show why Jamie Vardy should win the EPL Golden Boot

By Ayo Matthew

The Premier League title has been decided already with Liverpool confirmed as Champions for the first time since 1990 but there are still quite a number of battles to be fought and won such as the race for Champions League and Europa League tickets, surviving relegation as well as the race for the Golden Boot among others.

The Golden Boot was first awarded in 1993 and it has seen numerous winners since then with Teddy Sherringham being the first recipient of the prize with 22 goals.

For the first time since the 2010-2011 season when the accolade was shared between Dimitar Berbatov and Carlos Tevez with 20 goals each, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Sadio Mane and Mohammed Salah all shared the award last season.

However, this season, it seems there might be an outright winner as Jamie Vardy who hasn’t won the accolade before leads the log with 22 goals.

Here’s why we think Jamie Vardy will emerge as the winner of the Golden Boot this season

He has a better goals per 90 rate than any of his closest contenders with 0.63
Vardy is a more clinical finisher than any of his rivals even though he has played lesser minutes 2,674 and has a better shot on target, 40 while his closest rival Aubameyang has 38.

Leicester City play against Sheffield and Bournemouth in their next two matches and Jamie Vardy already has 3 goals against them this season so his streak is expected to continue especially against Bournemouth who have a poor defense having conceded 59 times this season.

Tottenham and Arsenal are up next for Arsenal and Aubameyang rarely scores against the traditional top teams and hasn’t scored any this season. So that gives Jamie Vardy the opportunity to add more goals to his tally.

Jamie Vardy is more likely to get goals than his closest rival as he has a better goals involvement with 26.

Jamie Vardy has 37 goals in total against the big teams (Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham) and with Tottenham and Manchester United in Leicester City’s last four matches, he’s likely to get at least two goals.
