Tokyo Olympics: Sports Minister, Sunday Dare promises Nigerian Atheletes dollars for medals!

Nigeria’s Minister for Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Sunday Dare has revealed that Nigerian athletes who win medals at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics will be rewarded with cash gifts.

Athletes with gold medals will be given $15,000, silver medalists will be given $10, 000 while bronze medalists will be given $7,5000 each.

The announcement came after Wrestler, Blessing Oborodudu won silver in the 68kg category of the wrestling event, and Long Jumper, Ese Brume claimed Bronze in her event

Her bronze medal is Nigeria’s first on track since Blessing Okagbare and the Women’s 4x100m team won silver at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

The announcement was made via a statement by Simon Ebohdjaiye, the ministry’s Director of Federation and Elite Athletes Department.

“Gold medallists will now be rewarded with $15,000, while silver and bronze medal winners will each get $10,000 and $7,500 respectively,”

The cash reward is an upward review of the initial $5,000 for gold, $3,000 for silver, and $2,000 for bronze rewards.

As it stands, only Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, the shot putter who complained of having only one jersey is in contention of getting a cash prize after he qualified for the final of the shot put event yesterday.
