OTD in 1950, Uruguay beat Brazil 2-1 to win World Cup (video)
On July, 16th 1950 Uruguay beat fellow South Americans Brazil 2-1 to win the World Cup.
The competition was stiffer with just 13 teams participating after several withdrawals, with hosts Brazil favourites.
After a goalless first half, Brazil went ahead in the 47th minute thanks to striker Albino Friaça.
Juan Alberto Schiaffino equalized in the 66th minute for Uruguay and Alcides Ghiggia gave them the lead in the 79th minute.
Uruguay would hold on to be crowned champions which in front of 199,854 fans at the Estádio do Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro.
It was Uruguay’s second World title after their triumph in 1930.
