Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, despite mot wining the 2023 Ballon D’or Award made history on the night.
The Nigerian striker was voted the 8th best player in the world in the 2023 edition of the award as he becomes the first-ever Nigerian player to finish in the top 10.
The Nigerian striker scored 31 goals, provided 4 assists in 39 games for Napoli last season. He was crowned the Cappocannoire award for finishing as the top scorer in the league.
Osimhen was also ruthless in front of goal for Nigeria as he finished top scorer with 10 goals during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification series.
The highest ranked Nigerian player in the history of the Ballon D’or Award was previously held by veteran forward, Kanu Nwankwo who finished 11th in 1996.
Osimhen joins an elite class of Nigerian players: Finidi George, Amokachi, Jay Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Ikpeba, Oliseh and Oshoala to have been nominated for the prestigious award.
Messi won his record 8th Ballon D’or Award after he was voted first overall ahead of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.
