The actor later wed Heidi Henderson, and the two of them had two children: Samuel and William Hurt, who were born in 1991 and 1989, respectively. His only child, Jeanne Bonnaire-Hurt, was conceived in 1994 while he was dating French actress, playwright, and director Sandrine Bonnaire.

William McChord Hurt was born in Washington, D.C., to Claire Isabel (McGill) and Alfred McChord Hurt, both State Department employees. He studied at Tufts University and The Juilliard School and has received four Academy Award nominations, the most recent for his supporting role in David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence (2005). Hurt was named Best Supporting Actor by the Los Angeles Film Critics Circle and the New York Film Critics Circle for the role.

Between drama school, summer stock, regional repertory, and off-Broadway, Hurt appeared in over fifty productions, including “Henry V”, “5th of July”, “Hamlet”, “Uncle Vanya”, “Richard II”, “Hurlyburly” (for which he was nominated for a Tony Award), “My Life” (winning an Obie Award for Best Actor), “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, and “Good”. Hurt read Paul Theroux’s “The Grand Railway Bazaar” and Annie Proulx’s “The Shipping News” for BBC Radio Four, Annie Proulx’s “The Shipping News,” as well. He has recorded “The Polar Express,” “The Boy Who Drew Cats,” and “The Sun Also Rises,” as well as narrated the documentaries “Searching for America: John Dos Passos’ Odyssey,” “Einstein-How I See the World,” and the English narration of Elie Wiesel’s “To Speak the Unspeakable,” directed and produced by Pierre Marmiesse.
