World Cup Qualifiers: NFF Still Waiting For FIFA ruling on Bafana Bafana – Olajire

The Nigeria Football Federation says it is still waiting for FIFA to give its ruling on South Africa fielding an ineligible player during the last 2026 World Cup qualification window in March.

Bafana Bafana reportedly featured Teboho Mokoena against Lesotho after picking up consecutive yellow cards in the previous matches against Benin Republic and Zimbabwe.

According to FIFA rules, the player in question is expected to miss the next game after consecutive yellow cards.

However, Teboho Mokoena played against Lesotho in March—a violation of the rule, which attracts a three-point deduction according to precedent.

When asked for an update on the matter, NFF Director of Communications Ademola Olajire says the football body are still waiting on FIFA to decide on the matter.

“We have not. That is up to FIFA. But the rule is the rule.”

The Super Eagles, who are in danger of missing out on consecutive FIFA World Cup tournaments, are hoping for a favorable decision from FIFA, which will reduce the gap between them and group leaders South Africa.

South Africa top Group C with 13 points after six matches, while the Super Eagles of Nigeria are fourth with seven points.
