5 things to note as Asisat Oshoala’s Barcelona Femeni wins women’s UCL title for the first time!

Super Falcons striker, Asisat Oshoala is now part of history as Barcelona Femeni emerged as first-time winners of the women’s Champions League with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Chelsea.

The tie surprisingly was concluded in the first half as Barcelona scored all four goals on the night within thirty-six minutes.

An unfortunate own goal by Melanie Leupolz gave Barcelona the lead as early as the 1st minute of the game before Alexia Putellas doubled the advantage via a spot-kick.

Things turned from bad to irredeemable worse for Chelsea as Aitana Bonmati buried a sublime strike beyond Ann Katrin-Berger to give the Spanish side a three-goal lead.

Graham Hansen added the fourth on the 36th minute as she tapped in a well-worked pass from Mertens.

Although Asisat Oshola, who came on as a second-half substitute didn’t score on the night, the Super Eagles wrote her name in the history of the competition.

  • Asisat Oshoala is now the first African to win the Women’s UEFA Champions League
  • She also holds the record of the first African to score in the women’s final when she scored the only goal in the 4-1 loss to Lyon.
  • Nigeria becomes the first African country to produce two Champions League winners from both sexes.
  • Barcelona becomes the first team to produce winners in both the male and female category of the competition.

Oshoala, who spoke to BBC Sports Africa, said she is thankful to God for the progress she and her team have made.

” I can only thank God who has made everything possible through sheer hard work, by playing alongside this incredibly talented group that creates a lovely family atmosphere.
