Super Eagles interim coach Austin Eguavoen has affirmed that he is still in charge of the team thereby debunking the news of him stepping down from his role.
OwnGoalNigeria had earlier reported that the coach has resigned from his role after prosecuting the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.
The media outfit who claimed to have spoken to Eguavoen quoted him saying his mandate was to coach the team for the two matches.
However, Brila Media now reports that Austin Eguavoen made no such remarks as the team arrived Abuja from Kigali in the early hours of Wednesday.
Eguavoen said:
It’s just unfortunate that people just triggered something that is not correct and the situation we are in now, we don’t need negative stories.”
“I only talked about, how I am going to sit down with the hierarchy of the Federation after these two games and how I will be prosecuting the next games.”
“Whatever people are reading out there is not correct, I am still very much in charge and still the technical director of Nigeria Football Federation saddled with the responsibility of being in charge of the Super Eagles at this moment and that’s where we are.”
The Super Eagles started their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with a 3-0 win over Benin Republic and goalless draw away at Rwanda.
The three-time African champions lead Group D with four points after two matches. The Super Eagles will take on Libya (home and away) next month.
