Out-of-favour Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has completed a return to Chippa United, rejoining the South African club as a free agent five months after their mutual parting in February. The 30-year-old left the Chilli Boys after the end of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and was subsequently linked with several clubs in Africa, including South African giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, along with a reported approach from Saudi Arabia, but nothing concrete emerged from those talks.
Chippa United confirmed the signing on their official X account, stating that the club is delighted to welcome Nwabali back to the Chilli Boys and that, after taking time away, he returns to the Eastern Cape. The goalkeeper first joined the club from Katsina United in 2022 and made over 60 league appearances during his first spell.
The prolonged spell away from competitive football significantly affected his form, match fitness, and standing with the Super Eagles. Nwabali now returns with a point to prove, hoping regular game time helps him force his way back into Eric Chelle’s plans ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming international assignments.
Nwabali’s absence stings even more given his standing as one of the continent’s most reliable shot-stoppers over the last two AFCON cycles. He first rose to prominence at the 2023 tournament in Côte d’Ivoire, where he anchored a Nigerian defence that reached the final before falling to hosts Côte d’Ivoire, a run that established him as one of the standout goalkeepers of that edition.
The 30-year-old goalkeeper was arguably even better at AFCON 2025 in Morocco. Nwabali ended the tournament without conceding a single goal throughout the knockout stage, keeping clean sheets against Mozambique in the round of 16, Algeria in the quarter-finals, and hosts Morocco in the semi-finals, with his only goals conceded coming in two group games against Tanzania and Tunisia.
Nigeria’s title dream ended in painful fashion against Morocco, as the semi-final finished goalless after 120 minutes before Nigeria fell 4-2 on penalties, despite Nwabali saving Hamza Igamane’s spot kick. He picked himself up days later to inspire Nigeria to bronze, saving penalties from Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush as the Super Eagles beat Egypt 4-2 on spot kicks, a display that earned him his second consecutive Player of the Match award.
That heroism made his subsequent fall from the Super Eagles squad and his lengthy search for a new club all the more striking. Chippa United now hands him a platform to rebuild both his club career and his international standing ahead of Nigeria’s next major assignments.
With the 2026/27 South African Premier Soccer League season approaching, Nwabali will be expected to challenge immediately for the number one jersey and help steady a Chippa United side building for the campaign ahead.
