Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets defeated Burkina Faso 2-1 to win the 2022 U17 West African Football Union (WAFU B) championship.
The five-time world champions had the advantage to win the title thanks to a brace by Abubakar Abdullah. After Abubakar had given the Nduka Ugbade youngsters the lead to close the difficult first half at 1-1, Abdramane Farouz’s strong header brought the Young Stallions back into the game.
Two minutes after the break, Abubakar again took advantage of a horrible error by the Burkinabe goalie to give Nigeria the lead.
Nigeria won every game in the tournament to the end.
Nigeria and Burkina Faso, the two finalists, have chosen the two tickets to travel to Algeria in March 2023 to represent West African nations at the CAF U17 African Nations Cup.
The Nigerian Golden Eaglets were defeated 3-2 by their Ivorian opponents in the WAFU B Tournament championship game played in Lome, Togo, last year, after scoring two goals in injury time.
Before scoring two goals late in the game to secure a respectable result, the team coached by Coach Fatai Amoo had fallen down by three goals. To successfully defend the title, though, it wasn’t enough.
