The 14th edition of the Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) will have a new winner after defending champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria lost to Zambia in Casablanca.
The Copper Queens of Zambia defeated the Super Falcons 1-0 on Friday to win the bronze medal in the 2022 WAFCON third-place match.
Chiamaka Nnadozie’s own goal in the first half sealed the defeat and earned Zambia a medal for the first time.
The Super Falcons who were very wasteful on the night were unable to recover as the Copper Queens held on to win at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca.
The Super Falcons’ tournament campaign ended in defeat, similar to their opening group loss to South Africa’s Banyana Banyana.
Nigeria was expected to win the WAFCON 2022 with a star-studded squad, but a 2-1 loss to South Africa and a 4-5 penalty shootout loss to host Morocco ended the Super Falcons’ La Decima dream.
They had decided to settle for a bronze medal, but were denied once more by the Zambian team, which appeared to be more committed to winning.
The loss to Zambia means the Super Falcons have now loss three games in a single tournament for the first time in the history of the competition.
