Background
Steve Kerr was born on September 27, 1965 in Beirut, Lebanon. Steve’s grandfather, Stanley Kerr, was an American humanitarian who moved to Beirut to help rescued women and orphans from the Armenian Genocide. Malcolm, Steve’s father, began his studies at Princeton but had to return to Lebanon to finish them due to a severe case of arthritis.
Malcolm went on to earn a Ph.D. in Arabic Studies, as well as several other advanced degrees. Malcolm met Ann Zwicker while both were students at the American University of Beirut. Steve would be the third of four children, born in 1965.

On January 18, 1984, Malcolm was tragically assassinated in Beirut by militant nationalists. At the time, he was president of the American University of Beirut. At the time, Steve was 18 years old and a freshman at the University of Arizona. The family later filed a lawsuit against the Iranian government under the 1996 Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act.
