OTD in 1978: Mario Kempes scores 2 goals as Argentina beats the Netherlands, 3-1 after extra time to win the World Cup (video)
On 25 June 1978, Argentina won their first FIFA World Cup title by defeating the Netherlands 3-1 in the final.
Both teams were among the favorites and advances to the final after the two group stages.
Mario Kempes put Argentina in front in the 38th minute as they took a one-goal lead to the halftime break.
The Netherlands would score an equalizer through Dirk Nanninga in the 82nd minute and the game proceeded to extra time.
Kempes would put Argentina back in from =t in the 105th minute while Daniel Bertoni sealed the result with Argentina’s third in the 115th minute.
Argentina would hold on to win 3-1 after extra-time to lift their first FIFA World Cup title in front of 71,483 in attendance at the Estadio Monumental, Buenos Aires.
