Arsenal are the new FA Community Shield champions after defeating Manchester City on penalty kicks on Sunday at the Wembley Stadium.
The curtain-raiser for the 2023/2024 Premier League season was quite an enjoyable watch as both sides fielded some of their new acquisitions.
The game ended 1-1 after extra time on Sunday, August 6 at Wembley Stadium.
The Gunners had chances to score in the first half with Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz testing City goalkeeper Ederson.
City’s talismanic striker Erling Haaland who didn’t see much action in the match was substituted for Cole Palmer in the 64th minute.
Cole Palmer got into the and gave City the lead in the 77th minute as he buried a curler from the edge of the box into the top-left corner of Ramsdale’s goal.
Phil Foden and Rodri had chances to extend Manchester City’s lead after the opener but Ramsdale denied both efforts to keep the scoreline the same.
Just when Manchester City thought they have the trophy in the bag Leandro Trossard equalised for Arsenal in the 11th minute of added time.
The game finished 1-1 after 120 minutes and the Gunners won the ensuing penalty kicks 4-1 with Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri missing their spot-kicks.
The Gunners have now won the FA Community Shield 17 times and City remain on six Community Shield wins.
