Check out 50 charming and irresistible bear tattoos and their meanings

A tattoo is a form of body art made by inscribing ink, dyes and colours, either indelible or temporary, into the outer layer of the skin to change the pigment.  Bear Tattoos are one of the most unique and attractive tattoos given the nature of the bear as well the meanings it carries.

People wear tattoos for different reasons, either to add more aesthetics to their skin, as an emblem in remembrance of something or someone, as a symbol of racial or cultural identity among other reasons. However, Bear tattoos are not just for aesthetics alone but a representation of nobility, divinity, courage, strength, dominance among others.

Bear tattoos can be traced back to Celtic times. While warriors inked them as insignias, girls tattooed them as female symbols of the moon and childbearing.

Since then, the meaning of Bear Tattoos have been twofold: the predator represents aggressiveness and cruelty, valour and courage, and on the other — motherliness, care, protector of the family.

Bears represent different symbols in various cultures, especially in pre-historic times. For instance, in ancient Siberia, people looked at the karhu or bear as the spirit of their forefather’s. In Korean Mythology bears are seen as their ancestors from the past.

In old Egypt, the bear represents sovereignty, privilege and authority. However, among Muslims and Christians in the early times it meant ambition, greed, gluttony and immorality, this understanding changed afterwards.

In Chinese communities, a lot of people worshipped bears as it brought a great deal of wealth in the region, and for the people of the Sioux, bear signs are all about honouring a successful hunt or a healing medicine.

Presently, bear tattoos have become increasingly prominent among both genders. Men go for a more rough design to showcase the strength and vigour, while the women go for teddy bears and panda designs to highlight the softer image.

There are various  types of bear tattoos such as the Haida beer tattoos, teddy bear tattoos, bear claw and paw tattoo, tribal bear tattoos among others.
