As the world celebrates the 35th anniversary of Nigeria’s triumph at the inaugural FIFA U-16 World Championship in China in 1985, the captain of that victorious Golden Eaglets team, Nduka Ugbade has looked back in regret at the circumstances that led to his setting all of his football memorabilia on fire, including his winners medal.
In an exclusive interview with www.naijasuperfans.com, Ugbade said the disappointment of missing Nigeria’s maiden appearance at the senior FIFA World Cup in 1994 depressed him for a long while and drove him to commit what he termed a “stupid mistake.”
Watch Ugbade narrate the story of his near depression and how he eventually overcame the disappointment of missing out on the World Cup.
Ugbade was on course to make history as the first player ever to attend all three categories of FIFA World Cups after helping the Super Eagles nick a ticket to USA ’94, but last minute intrigues and power-play led to his being dropped for some other players.
