Defending champions: Manchester United with Cristiano Ronaldo, Rooney among other stars needed to go past Arsenal in the semi finals of the 2009 UEFA Champions League as they attempted to win the title back to back.
The first leg ended 1-0 in favour of the Red Devils having missed quite a number of chances. Arsenal were confident of salvaging a a favourable result in the second leg. Hence, their second European final since 2005.
However, Cristiano Ronaldo made the difference on the night with a long range free kick goal and menacing counter attack goal that gave Manchester United a 3-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium.
