DR Congo End Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup Dream

The Democratic Republic of Congo ended the Super Eagles’ dream of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup next summer.

The Leopards edge the three-time African champions on penalties after 120 minutes of football.

Frank Onyeka put Nigeria into the lead three minutes into the tie off a deflected shot from the edge of the box.

The Brentford midfielder powered a low drive towards goal in the 2oth minute, but Lionel Mpasi-Nzau dived quickly to keep the scoreline the same.

Alanyaspor forward Meschack Elia restored parity in the 33rd minute with a simple tapping into the back of the net after he was set free with a square pass from Cedric Bakambu.

The Congolese dominated possession for most of the second half, leading to the time as the Super Eagles struggled to keep possession of the ball or create meaningful chances in front of goal.

Congolese captain Chancel Mbemba converted the decisive penalty after Semi Ajayi missed, sending DR Congo to the intercontinental playoffs.
