Throwback: Watch Ghana’s heartbreaking 4-2 loss on penalties against Uruguay OTD in 2010 (video)
The most memorable game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa was the quarterfinal battle between Ghana and Uruguay.
On July, 2nd 2010, Uruguay knocked out Ghana 4-2 on penalties to progress to the semifinals of the World Cup.
The game was closely contested with both sides at par on the attacking and defensive end.
Ghana broke the deadlock when Sulley Muntari whipped a long-range strike in the 45th minute as they took a one-goal lead as the halftime break.
Uruguay bounced back with a delicious free-kick by Diego Forlan in the 55th minute to equalize.
Both teams could not be separated at the 90th-minute mark and the game went to extra time. Asamoah Gyan had a chance to win it for Ghana when Luis Suarez handled a ball going onto the back of the net.
Gyan missed the spot-kick and the game went to penalties. Captain Mensah and Adiyiah missed for Ghana while Gyan and Appiah converted.
Pereira missed but Forlán, Victorino, Scotti, and Abreu all scored for Uruguay as they won the shot out 4-2 on penalties.
It was a heartbreaking loss for 84,017 fans in attendance at the Soccer City, Stadium in Johannesburg, most of whom were supporting Ghana to become the first African team to progress to the semifinals of the World Cup.
