Italia 90′: Chief MKO Abiola promised us cars if we would beat England! – Football legend, Roger Miller reveals!

One of Africa’s finest performances at the men’s FIFA World Cup can be traced to the 14th edition hosted by Italy in 1990 where a Roger Miller inspired Cameroun became the first African team to play in the quarterfinals of the Mundial.

Roger Miller played a crucial role en route to the quarter-finals as he came off the bench to score a brace against Colombia as they earned a 2-1 victory at the Sao Paolo Stadium, Naples.

Roger Miller while speaking to a Cameroonian Sports Journalist, Njie Enow, legend revealed that late famous Nigerian politician, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola supported the team and offered to give them cars if they beat England in the quarter-finals.

Roger Miller said;

“Chief MKO Abiola of Nigeria supported the Indomitable Lions 🦁”

“He flew his jet to Italy and gave us about 250,000$ as motivation when we got to the quarterfinals”

“He promised us cars if we could beat England and get to the semis”

The Indomitable Lions were on the verge of making history against one of the tournament’s favourite England but lost 3-2 in extra time as they crashed out of the competition.

However, it remains one of the best performances by an African side in the World Cup alongside Nigeria at the USA 1994 and France 1998 editions, Senegal at Korea/Japan 2002, Ghana at the 2006 and 2010 edition and Algeria at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil
