Lionel Messi set a La Liga record as Barcelona beat Alaves 5-0 in their last La Liga encounter of the season played on Sunday, July 19th.

After losing the league to Real Madrid, and a defeat to Osasuna in midweek, Barcelona aimed to bounce back against Alaves.

Messi provided youngster Ansu Fati to score the opener in the 24th minute and then in the 34th minute was supplied by Ricard Puig to score the second for Barcelona.

Jordi Alba provided the third for Luis Suarez as Barcelona took a three-goal lead to the halftime break.

Nelson Semedo scored the fourth in the 57th minute as Puig recorded his second assist while Messi scored his second in the 75th minute from another assist by Alba.

Barcelona bounced back with a win as Messi ended the season with 25 goals and 21 assists.

With 21 assists Messi set a new record in La Liga overtaken his former teammate Xavi Hernandez who had 20 assists in the 2008/09 season.

Messi also had his 1000th goal contribution in professional football with 702 goals and 298 assists
