Lobi Stars have become the first team to qualify for the grand finale of the NaijaSuper8 off-season tournament after beating City Football Club 4-3 on penalties at the Eket Stadium in Akwa-Ibom.
Debutant, David Okoromi gave the Makurdi-based side the lead in the 30th minute from a well-taken corner. Lobi Stars could have doubled their lead a few minutes later but John Lazarus failed to convert as his side went into the break with a one goal lead.
However, City FC showed resilience and bravery turned the tie around early in the second half. The Abuja-based side restored parity a few minutes after restart to put the pressure back on Lobi Stars.
With less than 20 minutes to the end of the match, Arinze Ogbonna scored from a direct free-kick to give City FC the lead.
However, Lobi Stars stole late equalizer via Joseph Atule to drag the match into penalties.
Lobi Stars eventually edged their opponent 4-3 on penalties as they booked their spot to the grand finale of the NaijaSuper8 which is scheduled to hold in Lagos July 7-16, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
