On August 23rd, 2008, Argentina beat Nigeria 1-0 to win the men’s football gold medal at the Olympic Games.

The game was a rematch of the 1996 men’s Olympic Gold final between Nigeria and Argentina.

In 1996 Nigeria won and in 2008 it was a revenge statement for Argentina.

The first half ended goalless, but the breakthrough would come in the 58th minute.

Lionel Messi provided a through ball to Angel Maria who lobbed the on rushing goalkeeper.

Argentina would hold on despite late pressure to claim the win in front of 89,102 fans in attendance at the National Stadium, Beijing.
