Messi’s reputation destroyed as Bayern Munich humiliate Barcelona 8-2 in Champions League quarterfinals

Bayern Munich recorded an 8-2 win against Barcelona in their quarterfinal encounter played on Friday, August 14th.

The game was billed to be between two titans of the tournament but was one-way traffic.

Bayern went in front as early as the fourth minute when Thomas Mueller converted a ball through to him by Robert Lewandowski

Barcelona was fortunate to get an equalizer in the seventh minute when David Alaba put the ball in his own net  (o.g.)

Ivan Perisic restored Bayern’s lead in the 22nd minute from an assist by Serge Gnabry who scored the third from a pass by Leon Goretzka in the 27th minute.

In the 31st minute, Mueller scored his second from a pass by Joshua Kimmich to give Bayern a 4-1 lead to the halftime break.

Barcelona pulled one back in the 57th minute when Luis Suarez converted a ball through to him by  Jordi Alba (assist)

In the 63rd minute, Bayern scored their fifth through Kimmich after fine work from Alphonso Davies.

Substitute Philippe Coutinho supplied the six for Robert Lewandowski. The Brazilian scored the seventh and eighth from ball to him by Mueller in the 85th and Lucas Hernandez in the 89th minute.

Analysis

Barcelona was no match for Bayern Munich who smelled blood and went for the kill. Bayern Munich could have scored 10 if they wanted, as they broke down the Barcelona defense at will.

This result is more humiliating for Barcelona star player Lionel Messi who is regarded as the greatest football player of all time. Repetitive knockouts in the Champions League have soiled his legacy for certain.
