The National Sports Festival being hosted by Edo State is set to come to a shocking end 48 hours after its opening ceremony at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
According to the local organizing committee of the National Sports Festival, the event is set to come to end due to a lack of funds. It also added that the Federal Government as at the time of filing this report is yet to fulfill its promise of supporting the event with funds.
This was disclosed in a statement;
The Local Organising Committee, Edo2020 regrets to announce that it will end the games abruptly tomorrow, Thursday, April 8, 2021, for lack of funds,”
“Rising from an emergency meeting this evening, the LOC says it has to take this hard decision due to lack of funds having expended its reserves to kick start the games.
“Regrettably, the FG is yet to redeem its pledge to support us as the host state financially for the cost of postponements. So, we are left with no option but to end the games at noon tomorrow.”
Events like Swimming, Tennis, and Taekwando had already begun at the National Sports Fedtival with athletes winning medals already.
The National Sports Festival ought to been held last year but was postponed to the advent of the Coronavirus Pandemic
