Messi was favourite to win the award after leading Barcelona to the treble including the Champions League, Copa Del Rey and La Liga.
Messi became the first Argentine-born player to win the award since Omar Sívori in 1961;
He won the award with a record margin, 240 points ahead of Ronaldo who won the award in 2008.
