Rivers United edge Kwara As Southwest Derby Ends In A draw

Rivers United are back to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League after a comeback win over Kwara United.

The Finidi George-led side came from a goal down to beat the visitors at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Sunday evening.

The visitors took a surprise lead on the 18th minute courtesy of Akeem Akani’s header.

The midfielder planted a fine header into the back of the net form a cross to put Kwara United ahead.

While Rivers United dominated proceedings for most part of the half, they failed to create a clear-cut chance.

However, the home side found the breakthrough a few minutes into the second half as Timothy Zachariah restored parity.

The forward had the last touch from a goal-mouth scramble in the box to equalize for the former NPFL champions.

Moments later, Timothy Zachariah provided the assist for David Benjamin’ goal to put the home side ahead in the match.

Rivers United scored a third goal late in the game but it was ruled for offside as the match ended 2-1.

Rivers United are now back on top of the log with 22 points after 17 matches.

The Pride of Rivers are closely followed by Remo Stars with 30 points. The Sky Blue Stars played out a one-all draw away at Ikorodu City in the Southwest Derby.

In other results, Enugu Rangers kept a clean sheet and picked a point at Katsina United while Bayelsa United secured a 2-1 win over Akwa United.

Sunshine Stars suffered the heaviest defeat of the weekend with a 4-1 loss to Niger Tornadoes in Minna.
