Rivers United

Nigeria Premier Football League side, Rivers United have been knocked out of the 2023/2024 CAF Confederation Cup.

The Pride of Rivers suffered a 2 nil defeat to reigning champions USM Alger in the return fixture of the quarter final.

Having won the first leg 1 nil in Uyo 7 days ago, Rivers United failed to score away from home despite creating a couple of chances.

Stanley Eguma’s side had a couple of shots on targets in the first half but failed to bury any of them.

Malian midfielder, Abdoulaye Kanou made the difference on the night as he bagged a brace to secure the victory for the defending champions.

Kanou scored the opener on the 37th minutes mark as he beat Abiodun Akande from close range a well-placed cross into the box by Nabil Lamara.

With the atmosphere electrifying, the home side dominated proceedings and had several shots on target. However, Abiodun Akande saved a good number of them until the 74th mimute.

Kanou capitalised on Rivers United’s lack of defensive awareness as he buried the ball into the back of the net from Leonel Ateba’s headed pass.

The match ended 2 nil as USM Alger match into the semi-finals where they will take on the winner between Berkane and Abu Salim as they look to defend their title.
