Video of the day: Riyad Mahrez last-minute Free-Kick against Nigeria sends Algeria to 2019 AFCON final
On July 14th, 2019 Riyad Mahrez’s last-minute free-kick was enough as Algeria beat the Super Eagles of Nigeria 2-1 to advance to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.
In a closely contested game, Algeria found the breakthrough through an own goal by William Troost-Ekong in the 40th minute to take a narrow lead at the halftime break.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria found an equalizer when Odion Ighalo cooly converted a penalty in the 72nd minute.
With the game seemingly heading for extra time, Algeria were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box and Riyad Mahrez produced a moment of brilliance to win the game for his side.
The win in front of 49,775 fans at the Cairo International Stadium sent Algeria to the final where they went on to beat Senegal and were crowned African champions.
