Sierra Leone perform “Dammam Miracle” on Super Eagles with 4-4 draw in AFCON qualifier

On Friday, November 13th the Super Eagles of Nigeria were held to a 4-4 draw by the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone in a 2022 Africa Cup of Nations Cup (AFCON) matchday three group qualifier played at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.

The Super Eagles went ahead in the fourth minute through Alex Iwobi, Victor Osimhen scored the second in the 21st minute.

Iwobi added the third in the 27th minute while Samuel Chukwueze scored the fourth in the 29th minute to give Nigeria a comfortable lead.

In the 41st minute, Kwame Quee pulled one back for Sierra Leone as they went to the halftime break three goals down.

In the 72nd minute, Al-Hadji Kamara pulled one back, and in the 80th minute Mustapha Bundu scored their third.

Kamara scored his second of the game in the 86th minute to equalize and they earned a point.

It was one of the greatest comebacks in African football as the Leone Stars showed determination.

This performance is comparable to the Miracle of Dammam when the Nigerian U-20 football team came back from four goals down.

It was at the 1989 FIFA World Youth Championship in Saudi Arabia in Dammam when the Flying Eagles faced their counterparts from the Soviet Union.

In the quarterfinal fixture, the Soviet Union went four goals up but Nigeria’s Flying Eagles came back from the dead and won on penalties.

They created a footballing record to come back from four goals down to equalize and then go on to win a FIFA World Cup match at any level.

This is a comparison to what Sierra Leone achieved with there never say die spirit they showed against the Super Eagles.
