“The desire to bring me here was special and I’m determined to repay the faith the club have put in me, ”

Simy Nwankwo broke Yakubu Aiyegbeni’s record of most league goals scored by a Nigerian in Europe’s top five leagues. The former Gil Vicente forward scored 20 goals, three more than the former Everton striker.

He also eclipsed Obafemi Martins’s record of all-time Nigerian top goalscorer in Serie A after registering 30 goals. Obafemi Martins scored 28 goals between 2002 and 2006.

Simy Nwankwo also became the third African player to score five league goals in a row after Liberia’s George Weah in 1996 and Senegal’s Keita Balde in 2017.

The striker will look to make a return and jostle for a place in the Super Eagles team after he made his last appearance at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia where he came on as a substitute twice.
