Super Eagles to Take Part In Four-nation Tournament Amidst FIFA Verdict On DR Congo

The three-time African champions will face Iran, Costa Rica, and Jordan at the Amman International Stadium in Jordan.

Nigeria will play Iran in the opening match on March 27th before taking on the host, Jordan, four days later. The fixture against Costa Rica is yet to be dated according to reports.

This development comes at a time when the Super Eagles are awaiting FIFA’s decision on the petition submitted in November over DR Congo’s use of ineligible players during the CAF World Cup playoffs in Morocco.

The Nigeria Football Federation submitted a petition to FIFA alleging that DR Congo didn’t follow due process during the documentation process of two of its players, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe, who recently switched their international allegiance from England.

Meanwhile, FIFA had already cleared these players, among seven others, who switched their nationalities to DR Congo long before the playoffs.

However, the Nigerian Football Federation argues that the Congolese federation (FECOFA) provided misleading or incomplete documentation to FIFA during the clearance process for these players.

While FIFA typically approves eligibility as long as a player holds a valid passport for the nation they represent, Nigeria contends that these players still hold European passports—a violation of the Congolese constitution.

General Secretary of the NFF, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, stated that FIFA may have been “deceived” into clearing the players because it is not the global body’s responsibility to enforce a country’s internal nationality laws.

Nigeria’s National Sports Commission Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, confirmed that FIFA are yet to give a verdict on the matter amidst rumours online.
