Michael William Krzyzewski (born February 13, 1947) is a former college basketball coach from the United States. From 1980 to 2022, he was the head coach at Duke University, where he led the Blue Devils to five national titles, 13 Final Fours, 15 ACC tournament championships, and 13 ACC regular season titles.
Only UCLA’s John Wooden has won more NCAA championships in men’s college basketball, with a total of ten. Krzyzewski is widely regarded as one of the all-time great college basketball coaches.
Emily M. (née Pituch) and William Krzyzewski, both Polish Americans, gave birth to Krzyzewski in Chicago. Krzyzewski was raised as a Catholic and attended St. Helen Catholic School in Ukrainian Village, Chicago, and later Archbishop Weber High School, a Catholic prep school for boys.
In 1969, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, and played basketball for Bob Knight. In his senior year, 1968-69, he was captain of the Army basketball team, leading the Cadets to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) at Madison Square Garden in New York City, where West Point finished fourth.
He won five gold medals as head coach and assistant coach of the US Men’s senior Basketball Team between 1992 and 2006.
