On this day in 2005, Nigeria’s U-20 men’s national team, featuring future Super Eagles stars such as John Obi Mikel, Chinedu Obasi, Isaac Promise, Taye Taiwo, Onyekachi Apam, Dele Adeleye, Sani Kaita and Olubayo Adefemi, defeated a Switzerland side made up of future internationals Johan Djourou, Philippe Senderos, Tranquillo Barnetta, Johan Volanthen, and Reto Ziegler 3-0 to advance to the knockout rounds of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in the Netherlands.
The scorers on the day were Obasi, Mikel, who scored at the second attempt from the penalty spot, and Promise. Sadly, Promise passed away in October 2019 in the US state of Texas.
Coached by Nigerian legend Samson Siasia, the Flying Eagles would go on to reach the final of the championship were they lost to a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina side.
