The Super Falcons of Nigeria started their Paris 2024 Olympic Games opener with a defeat to Brazil on Thursday evening in Bordeaux.
The nine-time African champions suffered a narrow loss to the Brazilian ladies as the match ended 1-0.
The Nigerian side started the match with good intentions as they created the first shot on goal but failed to convert.
While the Super Falcons struggled to convert their chances, the Brazilians scored against the run of play but Marta’s goal was ruled offside.
However, the Canarinhas struck again moments later to take the lead on the 37th minute. Marta’s well-placed pass found Gabi Nunes in space and the 27-year-old released a ferocious right-footed strike into the roof of the net.
Super Falcons miseries in front of goal continued in the second half as they failed on to put the ball pass Brazilian goalkeeper Lorena on three occasions.
The Brazilians held on to their slim lead till the blast of the final whistle as they extended their unbeaten run against the Super Falcons to three matches.
The Super Falcons are currently last in Group C after World champions Spain edged Japan 2-1 in the other group match.
