The Netherland took the lead in the encounter in the second minute when Johan Neeskens converted a penalty.
Germany would equalize in the 25th minute thanks to a penalty converted by Paul Breitner.
The game-winner came through a strike by Gerd Müller in the 43rd minute.
There were no goals in the second half as the Netherlands led by Johan Cruyff could not find an equalizer as West Germany held on for the win in front of 75,200 fans in attendance at the Olympiastadion, Munich.
