Itzin was the son of Evelyn Loretta (née Smith) and Martin Joseph Itzin and was born in Washington, D.C. His family relocated to Burlington, Wisconsin, where his father was mayor, when he was in sixth grade. Itzin’s initial goal was to become a theater actor, and he trained at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. He appeared on numerous stages across the country.

Itzin suffered a “major heart attack” in 2015 but continued to act. On July 8, 2022, at the age of 74, he died as a result of complications during an emergency surgery.]
