Who is Tim Scott?
Tim Scott (Timothy Eugene Scott) was born in North Charleston, South Carolina, on September 19, 1965. He is an American politician who was appointed to the United States Senate as a Republican from South Carolina in 2013 and won a special election the following year.
He is the first African American senator elected from a Southern state since Reconstruction. Scott previously worked in the United States House of Representatives (2011–13).
Education
Scott received a football scholarship to Presbyterian College before transferring to Charleston Southern University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1988. He then worked in real estate before opening his own insurance agency in the early 1990s.
Career
Scott first entered politics in 1995, when he ran for a seat on the Charleston County Council. He was elected and served until 2008. That year, he ran successfully for a vacancy in the state House of Representatives, and he was elected in 2009. Scott ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2010.
Endorsed by a variety of Tea Party factions, he easily defeated Paul Thurmond, son of the late Sen. Strom Thurmond, in the primary and went on to win the general election. He took office in 2011. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley appointed Scott to fill the Senate seat vacated by James DeMint in 2013. Scott won a special election to finish the term in 2014.
As his first full Senate term progressed, Scott became more vocal on issues of racism, particularly after Trump made comments that some perceived to be racist. He cosponsored legislation to make lynching a federal crime in 2018, and two years later, amid nationwide protests over racial injustice, he drafted the Republican response.
However, opponents of the resulting legislation, which did not pass the Senate, claimed that it did not go far enough in addressing police reform.
