Brighton & Hove Albion’s new Nigerian sensation Zadok Yohanna etched his name into the record books on Sunday as he made his Premier League bow in a dominant 4-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Amex Stadium.
The 19-year-old right winger, who joined the Seagulls from Swedish side AIK in a record-breaking summer transfer, entered the fray as a late substitute. He replaced Mats Wieffer with 12 minutes remaining, marking his first appearance in England’s top flight and his second competitive outing for the club after a brief cameo in the UEFA Conference League playoff against Tromsø earlier in the week.
Yohanna’s introduction came with the game already long decided. Brighton raced into a commanding lead through a Victor Lindelöf own goal (forced by Maxim De Cuyper), a second from De Cuyper himself, and a rapid brace from Jack Hinshelwood. Villa were further punished when João Gomes received a red card on his debut, finishing the match with 10 men.
At 19 years and 55 days old, Yohanna became the fourth-youngest Nigerian to feature in the Premier League, trailing only Victor Anichebe, Kelechi Iheanacho and Shola Ameobi on the all-time list.
The milestone capped a meteoric rise for the Bauchi State-born talent. Just over a year after leaving the Ikon Allah Football Academy in Kaduna for AIK, he commanded a Swedish-record fee of around €28 million to join Brighton on a five-year deal.
Manager Fabian Hürzeler’s side controlled proceedings throughout, and the late introduction of Yohanna offered the home crowd a first glimpse of the pacey, skilful winger whose dribbling and attacking threat had attracted interest from several European clubs. While he had limited time to make an impact, the debut itself represented another landmark step in a journey that has taken him from the pitches of northern Nigeria to one of world football’s most competitive leagues.
Yohanna will now look for further opportunities as Brighton continue their Premier League campaign and prepare for the second leg of their Conference League playoff against Tromsø. For a player still only 19, the history-making afternoon at the Amex is likely to be remembered as the start of something special.
