Super Eagles Defender Chidozie Awaziem Joins MLS Side FC Cincinnati

Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem now has a new club after joining Major League Soccer side FC Cincinnati in the United States.

The 27-year-old defender joins FC Cincinnati from Portuguese club Boavista on a one-year deal with an option to extend for two years.

Awaziem’s arrival at the club was confirmed in a video posted on the official X handle of the club on Thursday.

On why he joined the club, the Super Eagles defender said he was impressed with the performance of the club and what he could achieve with them going forward.

He also added that Nigerian midfielder, Obinna Nwobodo whom he shares a relationship with convinced him to accept the offer to become a Cincinnati player.

“When I spoke to Cincinnati, it was really an amazing time, and it was a wonderful conversation about what I could become with this club. I had heard a lot about Cincy, and I watched the games and how they’ve been performing in Major League Soccer, which is very, very good. I see that support, so I’m here to give my own support and help to the team.”

“I’ve had lots of conversations with Obinna Nwobodo,” he said.

“He’s my friend; we’ve played together and against each other in Turkey. I’ve known him for quite a while, and he’s an amazing guy.”

“He told me about the club, the culture, and the atmosphere. When we had spoken in the past, he had told me a lot of things. He’s always been asking me to come (to Cincinnati), and I told him, ‘Yeah, someday we’re going to be together,’ and here we are. So, I hope it’s going to be an amazing journey for us together.”

Awaziem’s normadic football career continues with his arrival at Cincinnati having played for seven different clubs previously.

The former FC Porto right back will look to stay at Cincinnati beyond one year as he explores what football has to offer outside the shores of Europe.
