Nigeria women’s senior football team, the Super Falcons have been knocked out of the women’s football event at the ongoing Paris Olympic Games.
The Super Falcons lost their final group match to Japan 3-1 at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes on Wednesday afternoon.
Already on the edge on the cliff, the Nigerian ladies came in the match with the hope of getting a win after losing their previous matches to Brazil and world champions Spain.
However, Japan who also lost to Spain, started the match the better side as they created goal-bound opportunities in the early stages.
It didn’t take too long before the first goal come in. Maika Hamano tapped the ball into an empty net via a square ball from Riko Ueki.
Mina Tanaka doubled the lead of the former world champions ten minutes later as she compounded the miseries of the the Super Falcons.
However, a brilliant interchange of passes between Jennifer Echegini and Rasheedat Abijade led to Super Falcons first goal of the tournament.
Echegini powered a left-footed strike strike from the edge of the box to bring the Super Falcons back into match.
Unfortunately, a sublime free-kick from Hitaru Kitagawa in added time of first half further put the game beyond the reach of the nine-time African champions.
The Super Falcons chased the game all the through the second half but couldn’t trouble the Japanese ladies as they held on to their lead to the blast of the final whistle.
The Super Falcons ended their run with three losses and five goals conceded.
